I realize there isn't much posting on this site yet but I hope someone can help me. I found this printers block at, no lie, a church. And I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about it. I know that it's a printers block. Anyone?

The longer I stare at it, the more familiar it becomes, but I can’t place it, and think it’s because I’ve been staring at it for so long it’s become familiar.

Using my slim GIMP skills, I put your image into the editing software and flipped it horizontally, then replaced the type face with the vermillion colour sampled from the recessed spaces to get an idea of what the pressed image would look like. Then I dropped it into Google Images and got… nothing.

Well, I got a bunch of corporate logos and that’s what your type reminded me of anyway. It looks like a logo or a colophon. The image is cheerful, suggesting humor. The crossbar of the “F” has hooked the devil’s mouth like a fish hook, suggesting he get his come-uppance in the end. The “0″ I originally thought represented a halo, but it doesn’t look like it.

A block of type is appropriate for Faust: he was an educated man, and he was a product of the rise of literacy in Europe and a symbol of the threat of an educated middle class to the status quo. Faust sought knowledge some thought should be left to God.

Additionally, many confuse Faust with Johan Fust (Family name later became Faust), a partner of mister moveable type himself, Johannes Gutenberg.

Thank you so much for replying to this. As an artist who has worked in print I knew about Fust. Google sadly did not help me either when researching it.

Thank you again

You're very welcome. Perhaps someone will recognize it, and let us know something about it. How did you come across it?

At a local antiques fair at a church. I actually found it on the day a dear philosopher friend of mine published his first book, a man who introduced me to Goethe and Faust so it's funny how I found it.

…And now that I remember how to repost images, here’s a local copy of the same image….

So how, after a year of searching, did you come across this?

I kept searching for it time and again. I figured it was a logo, so I looked up “faust advertising” on eBay and it was the last entry on the bottom of the page. All I could see from the picture the seller had was the O. Faust, and I just kind of knew it had to be it. The seller was kind enough to send me a close up of the envelope, which is above, and it fits perfectly with the block! This was the only time I’ve ever seen such advertising and the seller said they don’t come up too often. I bought the catalog with the envelope, so now I will have the set Laugh
When I googled it nothing came up. So I guess…luck!
